Stereophonics Storm Offstage

After being hit by a flip flop

Welsh rock dragons Stereophonics have stormed offstage in Singapore after being hit in the face by a sandal.

Rock stars – a different type of performer. In most areas of show business, the saying ‘the show must go on’ means literally that. In the music world, however, rock stars rarely hang about when the going gets tough.

Onstage in Singapore recently, Welsh group Stereophonics were blasting through their set when singer Kelly Jones felt something hit him. Looking down, the frontman realised that he had been struck full in the face by a flip flop.

Storming offstage with a short message to fans, the band disappeared while security at the Fort Canning Park entered the crowd. Finding the fan who threw the sandal onstage, Stereophonics then returned to complete their show.

Blasting through a series of classic hits, the band’s tour of South East Asia has otherwise been completed without a hitch. Returning with their new album at the tail end of last year, the Welsh group have been on scintillating form.

Set to return to the UK later this month for the first ever show at the new Cardiff City Stadium, Stereophonics join a roll call of top names struck by mysterious objects.

At a Liverpool show last Morrissey emerged onstage with a typically withering put down only to be struck full in the face by a drinks containers. Slamming his microphone to the ground, the ‘Pope Of Mope’ simply returned backstage and cancelled the show.

Meanwhile, Scottish dance producer Calvin Harris can sympathise with Stereophonics. At a recent Dundee show the retro-raver was struck full in the face by a trainer, lying prostrate on the ground for several minutes. Welcome to Dundee, mate!
