Specials Intimate Date

Entry by competition only

2 Tone legends The Specials are set to play a very special intimate date in London’s 100 Club ahead of their appearance at Glastonbury.

The Specials emerged from Coventry in the late 70s, combining the energy of ska with a fresh update on the sound. Taking on board the fury of punk with socially conscious lyrics, the band’s sound and image became a national sensation.

Using their label 2 Tone to launch similar acts, soon the British charts were dominated by ska acts such as The Beat, The Selector and Madness – who went on to become the most successful British singles act of the 80s.

The Specials effectively split in 1981, when three members of the group walked out. Founder Jerry Dammers struggled on in a new line up and, despite the astonishing success of ‘Free Nelson Mandela’, the moment had gone.

Yet The Specials retain a very special place in the hearts of music fans. The band reformed last year amid acrimonious circumstances, with songwriter Jerry Dammers (depending on which story you believe) refusing / not being allowed to take part in the tour.

Apart from Coventry, the band’s fan base was perhaps strongest in London where they recently played a residency in the Brixton Academy before thousands of adoring fans.

Sure, they might be a little thin on top, and that old Ben Sherman is about to burst at the seams, but the adulation on show was worthy of fourteen year olds watching their heroes for the first time.

The band are set to play a set at Glastonbury this summer. Britain’s biggest festival the show is almost certain to be one of the summer’s highlights, with The Specials keen to roll out their greatest hits.

Joining The Specials at Glastonbury this summer are a number of world class acts. Bruce Springsteen is set to headline the festival, with The Boss set to be joined by the likes of Neil Young, Franz Ferdinand, Doves and many, many more.

However before then The Specials are due to play a very special date at London’s historic 100 Club. Originally a jazz venue, the 100 Club became a hub for punk rock and its walls have housed countless historic shows.

The Specials are due to play the venue as a warm up for their appearance at Worthy Farm, and will no doubt roll out the hits. Entry to the show is for competition winners only, with fans able to enter via the band’s official website.

The Specials are set to play an intimate show in London’s 100 Club on June 25th.
