The tiny, windswept Pacific North West has had a stunning affect on modern rock music.
Gathering a handful of cities, this small corner of the United States has produced some of pivotal musicians. Few people realise Jimi Hendrix actually hailed from Seattle, and witnessed early shows by garage innovators The Wailers and The Sonics.
Seattle then went quiet before giving birth to the grunge explosion and groups such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney and much more. Grunge may be gone (someone please tell Nickelback) but Sub Pop remains, churning out great music by North West groups such as Fleet Foxes and Band Of Horses.
Capitol Hill Block Party is held annually in Seattle to celebrate the area’s rich and diverse music scene. This year the headliners include returning rock gods Sonic Youth. Sure, they might be getting on a bit, and Thurston Moore’s excursions into free form jazz are nigh on impenetrable, but few groups can raise your spirits like Sonic Youth.
