Snow business for Madness

Nutty boys bolster Snowbombing line-up

The annual avalanche of boarding, bands and beats is back upon us. Snowbombing returns to the slopes of Austria’s popular Mayrhofen resort in late March/early April with their most intriguing line-up yet, as jerky math-rockers and less-than-serious chart acts pit their wits against genuine, legendary nutty boys.

The reinvigorated Madness are this year’s headliners; hardly the first name you think of when it comes to a soundtrack for extreme sports, perhaps, but then their saxophonist did get carried off by a crane in the ‘Baggy Trousers’ video. Comical indie types The Pigeon Detectives, Palladium and The Whip are also on hand, along with ludicrous it-boy Calvin Harris, while Manc outfit The Courteeners should pull a decent crowd having carpet-bombed MTV2 with ads for their last single.

Several places further up the creative food chain, Foals look set to be the highlight of the Snowbombing live stage, with their thunderously entertaining epileptic guitar antics. Meanwhile Reading dance-rockers Does It Offend You, Yeah? will wow the cool kids and confuse the continentals, given that they sound so very French.

There are dozens of DJs on hand too, with every base pretty much covered, including a special slope-based edition of Peter Hook and Graeme Park’s twenty-five years of the Hacienda session, which should get the Mancs all teary eyed.
