Over a year ago now rising songwriter Daniel James received some devastating news.
As he prepared to head out on tour with Sam Smith the Northern Irish talent was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and immediately underwent treatment.
Daniel's PR Lorraine Long began running a 10k race every month, raising funds for Stand Up To Cancer as she went. Setting her sights higher, Lorraine then began organising a charity concert, pulling in some favours along the way.
Stand Up To Cancer hit London's stunning Union Chapel venue earlier this week, and it's a moving evening for all involved. Broadcaster, journalist and previous Clash correspondent Edith Bowman acted as host for the night, while those in attendance were also treated to a glimpse of the work the charity accomplishes.
Daniel James fittingly opened the evening, playing his first show in public since being diagnosed. Clearly nervous, the songwriter's amiable persona and sweet voice almost immediately won over the crowd, and his short set finished with rapturous applause.
Norwegian newcomer Dagny was up next, and her pop hooks soon began buzzing around the rafters of the historic building. Seafret toasted the release of debut album 'Tell Me It's Real' with a short, funny, entertaining set, with the Bridlington lads taking time to praise the work done by Stand Up To Cancer.
James Morrison may well be an acquired taste to some, but there was little doubting his talent during an emotional solo set – talking openly about the death of his father, the songwriter matched this to a ready wit, throwing in a few fan favourites alongside some new cuts.
Kodaline have long since moved past venues of this capacity, with the Irish band now proving to be an enormous attraction. Kindly agreeing to take part, the band's stripped down set found tracks from both studio albums given a radical re-work.
Kind, humble and humane, Kodaline pulled back the increasing gloss of their studio work to reveal the tender vignettes that lie beneath. Saluting each act on the bill, the Irish lads provided a wonderfully upbeat end to an inspiring event.
