This time last year, Slaves were still battling their way around what could charitably be described as the toilet circuit.
Dingy veneus, poor sound and cheap lager prevailed, with the Tunbridge Wells duo earning their spurs the hard way. Fast forward 12 months, though, and Slaves are reaching a tipping point, of sorts – festival slots are rammed, headline performances are reaching bigger and bigger crowds and debut album 'Are You Satisfied?' is surely destined to reach the Top Ten.
Out this week, the pair toasted 'Are You Satisfied?' with a special event at Shoreditch spot the Red Gallery last night (June 2nd). A return to intimate confines, Slaves seem to thrive on the close relationship between themselves and the crowd.
The set itself was dominated by material from their new album, with live favourites 'Hey' and 'Debbie, Where's Your Car?' received in passionate, fervent fashion. 'Cheer Up London' drew an enormous cheer, while 'Feed The Mantaray' was marked by a close friend dancing onstage while dressed as, well, a mantaray.
Ending with a frenzied bout of crowdsurfing, this was the perfect showcase for the raw, nascent energy which surrounds Slaves.
