British giants Radiohead have played a headline slot at Austria’s Frequency festival, unveiling a stunning new track.
Radiohead have reached the stage of their career where they can pick and choose the festivals they want to play. The Oxford band are sought after by some of the biggest events around, yet recently chose to headline a small scale affair in Austria.
Set in the rolling Austrian countryside Frequency is a new event that has made a big splash. Bringing together a host of great acts organisers knew they would have to grab somebody special as a headliner.
Radiohead confirmed their appearance earlier this year, with the Oxford group playing only a handful of European dates this summer. Singer Thom Yorke recently performed at Latitude, while the band themselves are set to headline Reading and Leeds.
Having recently released two new tracks, Radiohead emerged onstage at Frequency to a huge welcome from the crowd. Our man in the field Chris Todd reports…
“As anyone who has experienced Radiohead live will know, they are a mesmerising band who demand every second of your attention. To add to that, you’ve also got the added excitement of it being their first ever show in Austria as well as the regular signs on the video screen declaring an impending thunderstorm, which held out til the following day and lasted…all day.”
“Despite playing a similar set for the best part of two years now, the tinkering of the set list keeps it fresh each time. An eerie hush permeates through the crowd as they clatter into ‘In Rainbow’ opener ’15 Step’, the mellow electronic thump of ‘Kid A’ is sandwiched between a soaring ‘All I need’ and a furious run through of ‘The National Anthem’. ‘Jigsaw falling into place’ proves to be the best track live from their last album while a double whammy of ‘Bodysnatchers’ and ‘Idioteque’ induces a mass of angry dance-offs through the site.”
