Quadrophenia Hits Brighton

Pop up screening due

The film version of ‘Quadrophenia’ is set to be shown at a pop-up cinema in Brighton this weekend.

Released in 1973, ‘Quadrophenia’ remains one of The Who’s finest songwriting achievements. The album was a rock opera, and followed the story of a disillusioned young Mod after a weekend in Brighton.

Focussing on the legendary Bank Holiday ‘riots’ of the early 60s, the album was later turned into a film. The Who assisted throughout the production, with the film version of ‘Quadrophrenia’ being released in 1979.

Sparking the Mod Revival, the film remains an enduring depiction of youth culture. Given that it’s a Bank Holiday in England and Wales this weekend, film crew The Nomad are set to host a special pop up screening of ‘Quadrophenia’.

The one off screening takes place Brighton Racecourse on Sunday 28th August. Perhaps the most appropriate place to watch the film, the Racecourse is located within a few yards of many of the film’s most potent scenes.

Fans are invited to bring a picnic, although hot food and a full bar will be available on site. Capacity is limited, with the first 500 people through the door set to receive a an exclusive Quadrophenia badge.

The screening comes as The Who prepare to re-visit the iconic album. Earlier this year guitarist Pete Townshend confirmed that the band intended to get out on the road and play ‘Quadrophenia’ in full.

The first such tour in well over a decade, the news coincided with a ‘Director’s Cut’ box set focussing on the album. Featuring a raft of out takes, radio sessions and rarities the ‘Director’s Cut’ will be released on November 14th.

‘Quadrophenia’ will be screened at Brighton Racecourse on Sunday 28th August.
