This year’s BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend just got a little rowdier with the news that returning rave-rock heroes The Prodigy are set to join in the fun.
One Big Weekend was formed form the ashes of the old Radio One roadshows, which travelled the country to general disdain. Now all groovy, modern and trendy the station has updated their summer showcase to become the nation’s biggest free entry music event.
Touring the nation, One Big Weekend picks a different city each year to set up their base. This year the lucky area is Swindon, which be invaded by thousands of music fans. The bill for this year’s event is mouth watering featuring four stages and over fifty acts.
Already confirmed to play headline sets are Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian and Lily Allen. Joining the fun and games are recently announced rave giants The Prodigy.
Festival favourites, The Prodigy were formed by a group of renegades from the rave scene. Blending jungle beats to a ferocious rock template the band hit upon a winning formula. Hit records followed, before internal tensions forced their hiatus for some time.
The group returned with their new album ‘Invaders Must Die’ earlier this year. The Prodigy’s fifth full length effort, it was a return to their roots featuring some all out rave anthems. However the band weren’t afraid to experiment, with the new record matching the sonic explorations of such seminal early material as ‘Experience’.
Jason Carter, Editor, BBC Live Events, says: “We’re delighted to have landed The Prodigy to headline Swindon on Sunday 10th May. They’re a superb live act and we’ve been working very hard to get them in on the show as a late addition. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic weekend of live music.”
BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend takes place between May 9th – 10th.
