Pete Seeger Birthday Gig

Springsteen, Bragg and more to perform

A genuine American musical legend is set to be celebrated as performers gather for a special concert in honour of Pete Seeger’s musical birthday.

A pioneering figure in the study of American folk music, Seeger travelled with Woody Guthrie before striking out on his own. Such was his popularity that Pete Seeger was able to host his own TV show, presenting performers from across the pantheon of American music to an ill prepared audience.

Working tirelessly on behalf of liberal causes, Seeger was an active voice in the civil rights movement. He was also a tireless promoter of traditional musical styles, which sometimes caused friction within the folk scene. According to legend, Seeger’s reaction to Bob Dylan’s electrified performance at Newport in 1965 was to grab an axe and attempt to cut the wires.

The forthcoming concert takes place in Madison Square Garden in New York. Bruce Springsteen will headline, having named his album ‘The Seeger Sessions’ in honour of the singer.

Joining The Boss on the bill is Pearl Jam rocker Eddie Vedder, metal axeman Tom Morello and British folkie Billy Bragg. Seeger was born in 1919 and tickets for the shows will begin at $19.19.

The Pete Seeger birthday concert takes place on May 3rd.
