Legendary grunge group Pearl Jam have sold out two massive UK dates in just 17 minutes.
Pearl Jam are gearing up to celebrate their twentieth anniversary. The band were formed by Eddie Vedder as the 90s dawned, releasing debut album ‘Ten’ in 1991. Capturing the grunge wave just as it was reaching the shores of the mainstream, the album became a milestone in American rock.
Since then the band have developed and matured, outlasting their early critics. In a recent interview Vedder claimed that outspoken Pearl Jam critic Kurt Cobain would have come to appreciate the band over time.
The band are also well known for their political activism. Pearl Jam have often criticised American politicians with whom they disagree, while frontman Eddie Vedder is a vocal supporter of the Pro Choice movement.
Pearl Jam celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2011, and in the run up to that milestone the band are to re-release all of their studio albums. ‘Ten’ was the first to get the expanded treatment – read our thoughts HERE!
British dates are rare on the ground, with fans in raptures after two were announced recently. Shows in London’s O2 Arena and Manchester’s MEN Arena were confirmed as the New Year dawned, and tickets finally went on sale on Friday (May 8th).
However the band were left stunned by the scale of demand. Tickets for the O2 show sold out in just seventeen minutes – an astonishing achievement.
Tickets for the Manchester MEN Arena show sold out in no time at all, with all briefs being snapped up in a matter of hours. The group are set to play material from their forthcoming studio album on the dates.
Pearl Jam’s ninth studio album, the forthcoming album is the group’s first since their self-titled effort in 2006. Produced by Bruce Springsteen collaborator Brendan O’Brien, it is due for release in the Autumn.
