Cult Brooklyn rock group Oneida have been busy looking out their passports, after being confirmed for a rare British tour.
Dense and difficult, Oneida’s music can often appear strange and disconcerting to casual listeners. Devoid of hooks and singalong choruses, the band instead aim for something uniquely personal.
Using the repetition of Krautrock, the band’s hypnotic grooves takes heavy riffs and run with them. On the group’s album album ‘Each One Teach One’ for example, Oneida’s opening two tracks last for around fifteen minutes each.
Now over ten years old, Oneida’s unique music has finally found some measure of acceptance. Signing with Jagjaguwar, the band have released almost an album each year since the dawn of the Millennium.
Last year’s album ‘Preteen Weaponry’ saw the band begin to open up, with fans flocking to them as a result. Still dense and heavy on the repetition, Oneida began to adopt antique keyboards to craft a truly hypnotic groove.
Hiding themselves away in a recording studio, Oneida has returned little over a year later with a triple album. Working to the point of obsession, new album ‘Rated O’ may well be the band’s definitive document.
At times difficult, at others accessible the new record showcases a band who seem to exist almost entirely on their own terms – astonishingly, the triple disc set is scheduled to be part of an overarching triptych.
