New York Dolls Plot McLaren Tribute

During their London show

Punk pioneers New York Dolls are set to pay tribute to former manager Malcolm McLaren during their upcoming London show.

Malcolm McLaren was a devoted teddy boy during the early 70s, preferring the primal thrills of rock ‘n’ roll to progressive sounds. However all that changed when New York Dolls walked into his London clothes shop.

Falling over themselves, the gang of New York hoodlums turned rock stars had just released their seminal debut album. Oozing dangerous rock ‘n’ roll from every pore, McLaren was hooked and later managed them.

Passing away last week, New York Dolls are set to pay tribute to their former manager during a show in London tonight (April 19th). “Malcolm meant a lot to the Dolls and to me personally,” says Sylvain Sylvain.

“I was shocked when I received the news of his death last Thursday. I’ve known Malcolm since the early seventies, and even after the original line-up of the Dolls split, we remained close friends.”

New York Dolls reformed in 2004, after a break of almost thirty years. Asked to perform at Meltdown by Morrissey, the group released their critically acclaimed fourth studio album together last year.

The group are due to perform ‘Jet Boy’ as an encore at London’s Koko venue tonight. “We’re dedicating Jet Boy to Malcolm and we’ve extended invitations to some British musicians to participate. It’s going to be really special. God bless Malcolm McLaren.”

British musicians? Given his close involvement with the punk scene, it could be some very special guests…
