Under the weather indie icon Morrissey has been forced to cancel the rest of his residency at the O2 Academy Brixton due to doctor’s orders.
Watch out Ian McCulloch, those 80s icons are dropping like flies. Yesterday (May 28th) it was revealed that not only did Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan have stomach flu, but doctor’s were also forced to remove a cancerous growth from his bladder.
Whilst not quite as poorly, Morrissey has nonetheless been struggling with his health for quite some time. The indie icon released his latest studio album ‘Years Of Refusal’ earlier this year, the latest blast against a country he feels has rejected him.
A North American tour began well but several dates were cancelled after the singer began suffering from an unspecified illness. Morrissey prevailed, and was soon well enough to headline the desert festival Coachella.
However the singer’s ongoing British tour has been plagued with difficulties. Shows in London’s Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham’s Symphony Hall were re-scheduled as Morrissey’s health problems returned.
Adding to the cancellation list are further dates in London and Salisbury, with Morrissey recently cancelling the first date of a three night stint in the O2 Academy Brixton.
It had been hoped that Morrissey would recover in time to fulfil his obligations, but it seems that once again the singer’s health has got the better of him.
A statement from Morrissey’s management reads:
“Regrettably, the rest of Morrissey’s UK tour dates at the O2 Academy Brixton have been cancelled. Morrissey is on continued doctor’s orders not to sing. Ticket holders are advised to hang on to their tickets and await further information.”
“Event Organizers would like to apologize to fans for the disappointment. Additional information will be issued as soon as possible.”
Fans should look on the bright side – after a quick operation Dave Gahan will soon be back in action, with Depeche Mode due to re-start their world tour in Germany next month.
The Brixton Academy residency was the final dates on Morrissey’s UK tour, with his next batch of dates scheduled for October.
