Brooklyn space cadets MGMT are set to play a very special benefit show in their hometown.
The duo emerged last year with their debut album ‘Oracular Spectacular’. Equal parts electro hipsters and wide eyes hippy kids, MGMT blended dancefloor friendly sounds with some serious psychedelia.
Their single ‘Kids’ took on a life of its own after being given an overhaul by Belgian beat boffins Soulwax. The remix became one of 2008’s top tracks, and boosted the group’s popularity.
However, it has also landed the group in a legal dispute. MGMT’s French lawyers allege that the French President Nicolas Sarkozy used the song without permission, leading to demands for compensation.
That case is ongoing, with MGMT free to play the forthcoming event, which is set to take place at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Bandshell, and is scheduled for July 1st. Bandshells exist in public parks across America, but are rarely used to host rock groups.
The event will be held to raise funds for the Celebrate Brooklyn Performing Arts Festival, an annual event in the New York borough. Brooklyn has found itself at the centre of a thriving music scene recently, with many more groups following in MGMT’s wake.
MGMT will play Propect Park Bandshell on July 1st.
