Maximo Park For Glastonbury

New stage to be opened

Geordie punk-funk types Maximo Park have been confirmed as the opening act on a new stage at Glastonbury.

Maximo Park emerged from the tight knit Newcastle music scene with lethal riffs, acerbic lyrics and lead singer Paul Smith’s distinctive bowler hat. Local heroes, the group have even had a special brew of Newcastle Brown Ale named after them.

Recently the group launched their third album ‘Quicken The Heart’ with a special free show in the city. Maximo Park are hugely popular in their hometown, and thousands of fans had to be turned away after queuing for some time.

‘Quicken The Heart’ is the group’s first album in two years and is sure to thrill their devoted fan base. One of the few non-electronic groups signed to Warp Records, the forthcoming album sticks to a well-established template – but if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it.

Maximo Park will open the summer season with a history making performance at Glastonbury. The brand new William Green area launches on June 25th, and is named after Michael Eavis’s grandfather who was reportedly the first man to plant crops at Worthy Farm.

Space will be limited to 1500 people, with the festival site not officially open until the day after. Disappointed fans have a second chance to catch the group at Glastonbury, with Maximo Park set to plat the Other Stage on June 27th.

Maximo Park singer Paul Smith said in a statement: “Glastonbury’s still a festival that takes chances, as proven by Jay-Z’s triumphant appearance last year, so it’s an honour for us to be the first band on, in such intimate surroundings.

“It’s also an excuse to hang out and watch loads of brilliant music ’til we play the Other Stage on Saturday!”

In yet more good news for the band, new album ‘Quicken The Heart’ is currently at number one in the mid-week charts. However it will have to withstand a late push from Californian punk types Green Day who released their new album ’21st Century Breakdown’ on Friday (May 15th).

Glastonbury is set to take place between June 26th – 28th.
