Live Report: Janelle Monáe – O2 Academy Brixton, London

A scintillating night in London...

Janelle Monáe is a true one-off. An incredible songwriter, singer, dancer, and actor, she’s also made serious waves in the fashion industry.

A dictionary definition of a multi-hyphenate, the American star crossed the Atlantic for a string of live dates. Mere hours before her outstanding performance at Glastonbury, Janelle Monáe hit the stage at London’s O2 Academy Brixton to the ecstasy of fans.

The set celebrated her 2023 album ‘The Age Of Pleasure’, a creative statement that etched out physical joy while melting together her avant-R&B sound with aspects of afrobeat and reggae.

At the time of release, CLASH reviewer Maddy Smith wrote: “Monae’s summer-y exploration into hedonism, partying, sex and freedom is undoubtedly a radiant ode to self-love and expression. It’s refreshing to see another side to Monae’s diverse character, with the same strength in her gorgeous tones and vocal ability, only this time one revelling in sultry sex-appeal; combining reggae with themes which traditionally aren’t touched in this space.”

Hitting the stage of O2 Academy Brixton, Janelle brought ‘The Age of Pleasure’ to life in the much-loved venue, while also dipping into other aspects of her solo catalogue.
