Members of seminal indie giants The Libertines have re-united onstage at a tribute concert in London.
Held in London’s infamous live music den The Rhythm Factory, the show was part of a previously announced gig in tribute to promoter Johnny Sedassy. The music mogul was an early believer in the group, and put on countless shows by the band in their early days.
The Libertines quickly gathered a rabid following, inspiring their fans to form their own bands. A scene soon developed, with Sedassy sitting at the centre putting on shows by the likes of skuzz punks The Paddingtons and many more.
Sedassy died earlier this year, and a tribute concert was organised to honour his contribution to London’s indie scene. Pete Doherty was amongst those confirmed for the show, but the songwriter had a few tricks up his sleeve.
Babyshambles played a short set at the venue, playing seven songs in total. Opening with ‘I Wish’ the band raced through early tracks such as ‘Killamangiro’ as well as 2007’s hit single ‘Delivery’.
As fans screamed and cheered Carl Barat emerged onstage clutching a guitar while Libertines drummer Gary Powell took his place behind the kit. Borrowing Drew McConnell from Babyshambles, the make shift Libertines then plunged into a set of old favourites.
Bursting into debut single ‘What A Waster’ the band seemed on fine form, with Barat and Doherty exchanging the barbed lyrics. The pair revisited the breakdown of their relationship with ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’ before finishing with ‘Death On The Stairs’.
With Pete Doherty releasing a solo album and Carl Barat now decidedly lonely after the death of Dirty Pretty Things, rumours have been circulating that the pair are set to begin working with one another again.
However it seems as though this re-union will be a one off. In a recent interview Pete Doherty claimed that Babyshambles were the best band on the planet, and promised to make an album that would knock Oasis off their perch.
