This summer’s Sonar is already warmer than most British events, but the line up just got that bit hotter with electro star LA Roux due to perform.
A celebration of electronic music. On La Rambla. In Barcelona. Doesn’t really get any better, does it? Held in sunny Spain, Sonar is now sixteen years old but doesn’t seem to have its appetite for new music.
Held over three days in June, this year’s event has already confirmed some stunning musical talent including The Animal Collective, Moderat, Crystal Castles and many more. Hugely popular, Sonar attracts more than 80,000 music fans willing to have their skin tanned and their minds blown.
This year BBC Radio 1 will return with a stage devoted to some of Britain’s best up and coming acts. Hosted by Huw Stephens, the stage will be headlined by none other than electro singer La Roux.
Debut single ‘Quicksand’ marked La Roux out as a tip for 2009. The singer recently released the hit ‘In For The Kill’ which has prompted a stunning reworking from dubstep guru Skream. With her debut album due to be released over the summer, La Roux could be set to swap underground acclaim for mainstream recognition – and it would be thoroughly deserved.
Joining the electro star on the bill are Edinburgh hip hop act Young Fathers. Blending addictive beats with slick rhymes, the group’s material recalls American group Plastic Little or even South African wonders Playdoh. With a stage show that has to be seen to be believed, Young Fathers have been tipped to sign a massive deal shortly.
Also due to appear is hot new dubstep producer Bass Clef. With the genre now soundtracking TV adverts, many feel something new is need. That burst of originality could well be provided by Bass Clef, who blasts of electronica push the boundaries of what is acceptable on the dubstep scene without ever losing sight of the needs of the dancefloor.
Sonar is set to take place between June 18th – 20th.
