Kinky Afro To Finish

Glasgow clubland institution ends

Glasgow institution Kinky Afro is set to finish tonight (September 25th) with a spectacular closing night including a set from Matthew Herbert.

Glasgow is one of the main arteries in Britain’s clubbing network. With venues such as The Arches capable of drawing massive crowds to stellar names the city’s famous love of debauchery has been allowed to continue with an electronic soundtrack.

Housed in the city’s beloved Sub Club Kinky Afro kicked off its ten year whirlwind story in 1999 with a special charity night. Organised as a one off, the mixture of tribal percussion and pounding techno attracted a rabid following.

Continually striving to expand its musical template, Kinky Afro soon moved into musical territories unsuited to live drummers. Instead, the club began booking live acts before enticing some of the finest names in electronic music to grace the Sub Club.

Containing arguably the finest soundsystem in Scottish clubland the Sub Club’s confines have been graced in the last few years by – among others – Benga, Toddla T, Buraka Som Sistema, Harmonic 313, Neil Landstrumm and much, much more.

Of course, Kinky Afro intends to go out with a bang securing perhaps its best guest yet. Matthew Herbert is one of the most in demand names in electronic music, having pieced together Michachu & The Shapes stunning debut album.

Fresh from his Big Band project Matthew Herbert recently confirmed plans to make a concept album – about a pig. Was he joking? Who knows, but hopefully the producer will bring along a few sizzling anthems for his rare DJing slot at the final Kinky Afro.

Kinky Afro takes place tonight (September 25th) at Glasgow’s Sub Club.
