The evening opens with Houston home boy and Nancy Griffiths cohort Clive Gregson on acoustic guitar, he’s a strong solo performer and his version of Ms Griffith’s “I Hate This Town” is a stand out and not deemed a commentary on tonight’s venue or host town of Cheltenham.
Mr Holland’s team consists of a modest 12 piece brass section (3 trumpets, 4 Trombones and a mere 5 Saxophones!), Jools is perfectly supported by his dynamic backing musicians, with a special mention for Guitarist Mal Flanagan, who proves to be a star in his own right on the night.
The opening salvo of classic big band numbers was followed by a cracking version of Muddy Waters “Mojo” featuring Rosie May on vocals and a superb solo from the aforementioned Mal, concluding with a true piece of big band showmanship from the brass section at the front of the stage.
Ruby Turner was the hit of the night with Jools fully acknowledging her brooding vocal abilities centre stage with the true highlight being a version of “Silent Night“ with just the two of them, wowing the audience of 1000 plus into complete silence.
With a riveting two hours under their belt the band finished the night with a few classic big time Blues numbers that had the audience dancing in the aisles.
Mr Holland is a consummate professional and a great band leader – a thoroughbred night without any hurdles and a clear winner…
