Indie star Jon McClure has used his headline performance at the Tramlines event to heal the divide between Sheffield’s football teams.
A passionate advocate of talent in his hometown of Sheffield, Jon McClure announced details of the Tramlines event earlier this year. Together with Arctic Monkeys star Matt Helders and producer Toddla T the singer curated a weekend’s worth of new talent.
Combining up and coming stars with well established performers, Tramlines had a slant on new talent from Sheffield. Held in venues across the Yorkshire city, the event took place this weekend and saw a host of stars descend on the Steel city.
Tramlines kicked off with a slot from Rolo Tomassi, before Slow Club calmed things down. The twee-some two-some walked through the crowd with their instruments, playing an acoustic slot to open their set.
Other spectacular performances came from former members of local heroes Milburn, who have formed a new band named Mairead. The Chapman Family also performed, before one time Ordinary Boys singer Preston unveiled his new electro-pop direction.
The Celebrity Big Brother contestant (see Preston, you can’t escape it that easily) was watched by a bemused crowd before Little Boots arrived. The singer played just three songs, ending with ‘Stuck On Repeat’ as things began to get heated.
The final day saw the likes of Cats In Paris, The xx and more perform sets. Tramlines finished with a set from Reverend And The Makers, with Jon McClure attempting to calm a group of football fans watching from the side of the stage.
“I don’t care if you’re a Blade or an Owl,” he said, referring to Sheffield’s two football teams, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. “It’s all Sheffield!”
Sheffield football teams, of course, have an infamous casual element. United’s Blade Crew ran amok across England during the 80s and beyond, with their membership at one point including Beautiful South singer Paul Heaton.
