British synth pioneer John Foxx is set to play a rare analogue show at London’s Roundhouse venue.
Hailing from Lancashire, John Foxx travelled to London to study art. However he was almost immediately engulfed in the city’s music scene, making sound collages with tape recorders and primitive electronic equipment.
A prime mover in the punk explosion, John Foxx later fronted the first version of Ultravox! and wrote the bulk of their first album. Receiving critical acclaim but lacking sales, the singer later departed to kickstart a solo career.
Snapped up by Virgin, Foxx was allowed almost free reign to do what he liked. Left alone in the studio with state of the art electronic kit, the singer began working on what would become some of the first electronic music commercially released in the UK.
Preceding the New Romantic movement, John Foxx’s debut solo LP ‘Metamatic’ has enjoyed a remarkable second life. Falling under the radar at the time, it has since been cited as a hugely influential LP.
Taking time off music to focus on his graphic design career, John Foxx announced his return with a series of shows last year. Greeted as a returning hero by fans, the singer is now set to play a special analogue only show at London’s Roundhouse as part of the venue’s Short Circuit series.
Focussing on his early work, John Foxx will use only original equipment. Also playing material from his new ‘John Foxx & The Maths’ project, Foxx will be joined by Benge – himself a renowned producer.
In a recent interview Benge’s material has been hailed by none other than Brian Eno as “brilliant contribution to the archeology of electronic music”.
With fellow 80s electro pioneer Gary Numan set to provide a DJ set, the event looks set to be a unique one off.
