American festival All Points West have swapped one hip hop titan for another – with Jay-Z replacing Beastie Boys.
One of the year’s most eagerly anticipated comebacks has been postponed. Beastie Boys have not released a rap album in five years, with their new album ‘Hot Sauce Committee’ featuring guest appearances from a raft of stars.
Clash recently caught up with the band for a lengthy chat about their forthcoming album – read an excerpt here!
However it is not to be. The album has been pushed back and all promotional activities postponed after rapper Adam Yauch revealed that he is suffering from cancer. In a video message to fans the hip hop icon assured fans that his voice would not be affected, with MCA due to being treatment shortly.
The Beastie Boys were due to headline All Points West, where they have now been replaced by Jay-Z. A fellow returning hip hop heavyweight, Jay-Z is busy promoting his new album ‘The Blueprint 3’.
Produced by Kanye West, the album will undoubtedly be one of the most commercially success of the year. However the rapper has different aims, and is eager to challenge himself.
In sessions with Kanye West the rapper chalked off all autotune effects from his album, leading to the controversial new single ‘D.O.A. (Death Of Autotune)’.
Jay-Z has not played a United States festival before. Previously the rapper has headlined Roskilde, and of course Glastonbury. The hip hop star’s appearance at Worthy Farm led to some stinging dismissals, with Oasis star Noel Gallagher arguing that he had no place at the festival.
However Jay-Z prevailed with a stunning performance, opening with a cheeky version of ‘Wonderwall’.
Taking place in New Jersy, All Points West is set to be headlined by metal giants Tool and stadium filling indie types Coldplay.
All Points West takes place between August 1st – 2nd.
