Janelle Monáe, Solange and Tame Impala are amongst the first names confirmed for Primavera Sound 2019.
The Spanish festival has gained a reputation for forward-thinking line ups, and 2019 promises to be a year where barriers are broken.
The initial burst presents something close to a 50/50 gender split, with highlights including the sensational Janelle Monáe, Tame Impala presenting new material, and the wonderful Solange.
Hip-hop icon Future will perform at the festival, rap icon Nas will hit Primavera Sound, and neo-soul goddess Erykah Badu is set to tread the boards.
It's a sensational first blast for the Barcelona festival, which addresses a previous lack of diversity in its opening statement.
From the Primavera press note…
"Why do an equality line up now? Because we should have done it ages ago. Because, looking back over our previous line ups and despite the progress in the last few editions, we needed to go further. If half of our audience is female, why shouldn’t half of our line up be so too? Why can’t there be equality in schedules, styles and stages? It has not been easy to fight against the inertia that has been passed down for so many years, but after all, if the future is female, what’s the point in waiting?"
Primavera Sound 2019 runs between May 30th – June 1st.
