One of Britain’s most iconic labels is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary, with the stars lining up to pay tribute to Island.
Founded by Chris Blackwell in Kingston, Jamaica, Island relocated to London in the early 60s. Licensing some of the finest Jamaican recordings around, Island helped push West Indian music into the mainstream.
Island of course were responsible for the career of iconic singer Bob Marley. The Wailers signed to the label, which helped steer them to worldwide fame.
Still releasing great records, Island’s roster currently includes Keane, The Fratellis and of course U2. A remarkable example of what can happen if a label treads its own path, Island’s story is a wonderful example of the evolution of the British music industry.
Says Blackwell: “When I recorded ‘Lance Hayward at the Half Moon’ in 1959 at Federal Records Studio in Kingston, Jamaica, I had no inkling what path this had set me on. It has been an honour and a privilege to work with some of the greatest musical artists of all time. It was always my intention at Island to make records that stood the test of time, and I’m proud that Island is still a potent force in music 50 years since that first release. I’m very excited to be collaborating with the label to celebrate Island’s 50th birthday and I’m particularly excited about the week of shows in London.”
The Island Life festival takes place throughout one week in May in London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Amongst those confirmed to perform are Jamiaican legends Sly & Robbie, as well as Toots & The Maytals.
Joining them will be current Island stars such as Keane and The Fratellis, as well as newcomers such as Ladyhawke. Amongst some very special treats arranged for fans are special performances from reformed Talking Heads off shoot Tom Tom Club and a possible slot from troubled singer Amy Winehouse.
Island Life takes place between May 26th – 31st in the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London.
