Sheffield indie titans Reverend and the Makers played a controversial set at T In The Park on Saturday (July 12th) calling for Scottish independence and attacking hip hop star Jay-Z.
The group took the stage in the King Tut’s Wah Wah Tent obviously psyched up, and this furious energy immediately transfered itself to the crowd making for an especially raucous set. Lead singer Jon “The Reverend” McClure preached to the converted throughout, with the packed tent cheering his every word.
The singer stopped between songs to deliver lengthy sermons, closing the set by shouting “God bless Scotland, make sure you declare independence.” Jay-Z meanwhile, must make do with yet another indie star criticizing him. Fresh from a verbal battle with Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, “Reverend” McClure took issue with the hip hop star saying: “’99 problems but the bitch ain’t one’? I don’t know any girls I call a ‘bitch’.”
Amongst the group’s set were debut album highlights “Open Your Window” and “He Said He Loved me” alongside their biggest hit “Heavyweight Champion Of The World”.
