Madchester legends The Happy Mondays have been added to the bill for this summer’s Guilfest event.
The Happy Mondays were one of the most influential and notorious group’s to emerge from the baggy era. Mixing the emerging sounds of Chicago and Detroit with indie rock the group revolutionised British music.
Albums such as ‘Bummed’ have become hugely influential, with groups such as Friendly Fires and The Rapture citing the band as a touchstone. Happy Mondays initially split in 1993 following the poor reception afforded their album ‘Yes Please’.
Singer Shaun Ryder went on to form a number of other musical projects, notably Black Grape. Happy Mondays reformed in the late 90s but quickly fell apart due to escalating drug abuse and personal problems.
The band reformed for a more definite run in 2007. Recording the album ‘Uncle Dysfunctional’ Happy Mondays took to the road bringing back memories of their debauched heyday.
The group have been added to the bill for this summer’s Guilfest event. The festival has already unveiled its headliners with former Beach Boy Brian Wilson to play a set, alongside rock icons Motorhead.
Guilfest takes place in Stoke Park, Guildford between July 11th – 12th.
