Guillemots have confirmed plans for two – completely acoustic – London shows.
The term ‘acoustic show’ is something of a misnomer. Most acoustic shows involve mountains of kit, with few daring to take the term seriously.
Guillemots, though, plan to do exactly that. The band have confirmed two shows at the Village Underground in London, with the outfit planning to perform entirely without amplification at an event labelled Positive Blackout.
A Victorian warehouse, the Village Underground is perhaps better known for hosting the DURRR night rather than such an intimate performance. Showing a remarkable amount of faith in their audience – what if a mobile phone went off? – Guillemots aim to play two sets in a totally acoustic fashion.
Using only the natural amplification of the hall, the band will eschew the power of a PA. “This is something we’ve wanted to do for ages” explained Fyfe Dangerfield recently, “and Village Underground’s the perfect place to do it, the room just has an aura to it as soon as you walk in. I love the idea of gigs like this where there’s nothing to hide behind. It’s that bit more personal and dynamic for everyone.”
Roping in a few friends, admirers and personal heroes Guillemots plan to present an eclectic array of talent. Fusing spoken word, performance and music the list of support acts include songwriting legend Robyn Hitchcock, cello player Oliver Coates and electronic composer Thomas Feiner.
Showcasing their tastes, the line up for both nights contains some curveballs. For example the “Grand Ole English Opry” features clog dancing and modern takes on classics from the English folk canon.
Tickets are on sale now. Doors on both nights open at 7pm, with fans advised to bring a cushion.
Guillemots are set to play the following shows:
