Gorillaz Hit The Roundhouse

Host of guests join the band

Cartoon pop collective Gorillaz have made their long awaited British live return at the Roundhouse.

One of the world’s first multi-media pop groups, playing live has always posed a problem for Gorillaz. In real life going by the names of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, the band play behind enormous projections.

Always joined by a host of collaborators, Gorillaz recently completed a host of Stateside dates including a set at Coachella. Acclaimed by fans and critics, new material from ‘Plastic Beach’ was mixed with old favourites.

Returning to the UK, Gorillaz played their first British show in some time last night (April 29th). Recruiting some of their most revered guest stars, the band hit The Roundhouse for a memorable night.

Jamie Hewlett’s specially crafted visuals played throughout the show, which was dominated by material from the new album. Gorillaz were joined by soul icon Bobby Womack, who adds his vocals to ‘Plastic Beach’.

Elsewhere, De La Soul, Shaun Ryder and Super Furry Animals songwriter Gruff Rhys performed alongside the cartoon pop collective.

Gorillaz used a live band, which included to former members of The Clash. Mick Jones and Paul Simonon performed with the group, wearing sailors hats to keep in touch with the nautical theme.

For the hit single ‘Stylo’ Gorillaz were joined by American underground rap star Mos Def, while Bootie Brown appeared on the classic hit ‘Dirty Harry’. Meanwhile, British rappers Kano and Bashy performed on ‘White Flag’ after an extended intro.

Finishing with a bass heavy version of ‘Clint Eastwood’ the group were on ferocious form ahead of their European tour.
