Spanish festival Benicassim has managed to grab a headline performance from cartoon pop collective Gorillaz.
Set by the Spanish coastline, Benicassim is held in an almost perfect environment. Sun, sand, cheap beer and plenty of music – what more do you really need from a summer weekend?
The latest addition to the Spanish festival are cartoon pop collective Gorillaz. Led by Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn the group recently returned with their smash hit album ‘Plastic Beach’.
Featuring a host of guest stars, Gorillaz recently played two sold out shows at The Roundhouse. Joining them were former members of The Clash Mick Jones and Paul Simonon, with soul icon Bobby Womack dropping by.
A visit to the beach actually sparked the new album, with Damon Albarn telling Radio 1 that ‘Plastic Beach’ was spawned in Cornwall. “We were in Devon on holiday together… And we’d done this spinoff thing called GSS, well friends of ours had done it, and one of them was telling us about the response when they played Clint Eastwood or other Gorillaz songs in this DJ set that they did and how people went crazy for it so we sort of said, why don’t we do another album”.
“So the ‘Plastic Beach’ came from just sitting on the beach and noticing that although it looked like a very clean beach, actually in between the sand and the stones there were millions of little bits of plastic. And I suppose two words – plastic and beach – felt like a Gorillaz idea, they were two words that shouldn’t really be put together.”
Joining the party are already announced groups such as The Prodigy, Kasabian, Vampire Weekend and more.
FIB Benicassim takes place between July 15th – 18th.
