American psych-pop legends The Flaming Lips are set to re-visit their classic album ‘The Soft Bulletin’.
Gaining more mainstream acceptance, The Flaming Lips seemed to lose their outlaw edge. Were once the band produced four disc albums of psychedelic madness they now seemed tame, almost coffee table.
Returning with their new album ‘Embryonic’ earlier this year The Flaming Lips recovered their creative spark. Alongside a bizarre cover of ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ it seems that the band are ready to attempt the unexpected.
Now The Flaming Lips are to return to a pivotal moment in their career. Released in 1999 ‘The Soft Bulletin’ is the moment the band began to retreat away from outright weirdness towards something more universal.
A genuinely tremendous record, live shows at the time are remembered by fans as a deeply inventive and emotional affair. Utilising bubble machines and a cover of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ the band have regained their thirst for this period.
Set to headline a one off show at London’s Alexandra Palace, the performance will see The Flaming Lips joined by some very special guests.
Dinosaur Jr are due to perform ‘Bug’, their 1989 masterpiece, in its entirety. The band’s second album it saw them prefigure grunge with a mixture of classic rock themes and gloriously loud guitars.
Due to perform at the massive one off show, the alt rock pioneers will be joined by Deerhoof who are set to play the whole of ‘Milk Man’. A stunning line up, the Alexandra Palace show has been organised by ATP and Don’t Look Back.
Set to take place on July 1st, tickets for the show are set to go on sale from 9am this Friday (September 3rd).
