Doherty In Benefit Show

Update: New show added

Former Libertines singer Pete Doherty is to re-visit his roots with a special show paying tribute to London promoter Johnny ‘Rhythm’ Sedassy.

Way back when, The Libertines were just another aspiring London indie group, desperate for a place to play. With a lack of decent venues, Johnny Sedassy began promoting shows in the Rhythm Factory – a decrepit London bar, with little room to move.

Somehow, the tiny bar became the centre of the capital’s hottest bands scene in decades. The Libertines turned the Rhythm Factory into a home from home, attracting like minded spirits from across the city and beyond.

Soon The Rhythm Factory became a well known name in itself, spawning the compilation ‘Bring Your Own Poison’ which features twelve acts recording the venue. Sedassy was at the centre of all this, promoting shows by the likes of Babyshambles, The Noisettes, Razorlight, Selfish Cunt and some of The View’s first London shows.

HIs nights provided the foundation for what became a hugely popular scene, yet Sedassy’s role is often overlooked. Sadly, Johnny Sedassy passes away on March 16th after a lengthy battle with bowel cancer.

A number of tribute shows have been organised to the popular London promoter. The Tyburn Arms launched its tribute with the words “as a music promoter/event organizer himself, he always knew how to throw one hell of a gig, so with your support and a little bit of help from him looking down from above, tomorrow should be a special one.”

Pete Doherty has been confirmed as playing the May 15th show in The Rhythm Factory. He will be joined by a roll call of acts from the era’s glory days including The Paddingtons, Red Roots, Melody Nelson and many more.

All profits from the show will be donated to the Sir Michael Sobell Charity in Oxtord, where the promoter spent his final days. Tickets are £25 in advance, or £30 on the door.
