American rock giants Counting Crows have been forced to cancel a London headline show after singer Adam Duritz fell ill.
Is there something going around? No sooner is Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode fame rushed to hospital than a host of other rock stars begin dropping like flies. Perhaps it’s a rock star only evolution of swine flu, or maybe it’s just a risk of the job…
All that time on the road must play havok with the immune system. The newest rock star to fall victim to this unknown syndrome is Adam Duritz, the lead singer of Counting Crows. The band were due to play a headline show at London’s O2 Academy Brixton but postponed the show just hours before stage time.
Fans have been advised to retain their tickets, with the show being immediately re-scheduled for June 1st. Counting Crows have also been forced to cancel a show in the Birmingham International Centre on May 18th.
A statement on Counting Crows official website states:
“Counting Crows have regrettably had to postpone their London Brixton O2 Academy show tonight due to illness and have re-scheduled the show for June 1st.”
“Lead singer Adam Duritz has been suffering from the flu and is still not 100% well. Adam wants to give his fans a full Counting Crows experience – a show which they deserve and expect. Although an uneasy decision to make, Duritz felt that this was the right choice under the difficult current circumstances.”
“The band send their sincere apologies to their fans and look forward to playing this show on June 1st.”
Counting Crows broke through the mainstream with their hugely successful debut album ‘August And Everything After’ which spawned the perennial hit ‘Mr Jones’. Their old fashioned, roots driven rock has become a massive concert favourite, even as the band’s commercial star fades outside of their native United States.
The group were immediate favourites with rock cognoscenti, playing as complete unknowns as a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction event. They remain the only new group to have ever played at the ceremony.
Counting Crows are due to play London’s O2 Academy Brixton on June 1st. There has been no announcement of a new Birmingham date.
