Grammy-performing baby-popping singer M.I.A. has been added to the bill for this year’s Coachella.
As openings to a year go, M.I.A.’s entrance into 2009 has been nothing short of spectacular. Heavily pregnant, the singer performed at the Grammy awards where her Clash-sampling hit ‘Paper Planes’ had been nominated for ‘Record Of The Year’.
Just a few days later the singer gave birth to a healthy baby boy, and was unable to fulfil a scheduled performance at the Oscars. The Sri Lankan born star was forced to watch as the soundtrack to ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ – to which she participated – waltzed away with two awards.
M.I.A. is the latest act to join the bill at Coachella. Set in the Californian desert, the singer will join such stars as Sir Paul McCartney, The Killers, The Cure, Morrissey and many more.
Amy Winehouse was initially announced to appear, and was scheduled to premiere tracks from her forthcoming third album. However the singer was recently arrested in London and charged with assaulting a fan at a show in September. As a result it means that Winehouse getting her visa has suddenly become very unlikely.
Coachella boasts an eclectic bill this year with such acts as Devendra Banhart, The Orb, Etienne De Crecy, Murder City Devils, Busy P and many more being added recently.
Coachella takes place between April 17th – 19th in Indio, California.
