Clash Gigs Of The Week 18/03/13

With Primal Scream, The Men and much more...

The Men @ The Garage, London, Tuesday 19th March

Londoners can get a double dose of raucous rock 'n' roll this week with five-piece The Men playing two gigs in as many days in the capital. First up is an in-store gig tonight at Rough Trade East, followed by a headline show at The Garage in Islington on Tuesday.

Expect a hailstorm of choppy punk guitars and crashing drums, all wrapped up in unwashed check shirts and sweaty long hair. Four albums down the line and The Men have garnered a reputation for frantic live shows, so the easily bruised might want to consider wearing extra padding.

The Hall of Mirrors @ The Social, London, Tuesday 19th March

The Hall of Mirrors have recently been fitting in lots of gigs following last year's well received, long running, and often sold out residency Psychedelic Sunday at London venue The Lexington. Before that they secured a support slot on Eliza Doolittle's UK tour, which has seen them win some great reviews and a loyal fan base.

It's a busy time for this band; for lovers of 1960s torch songs, with a hint of psychedelia and gorgeous female vocals on top, this gig will be a real treat.

Primal Scream @ Royal Albert Hall, London, Thursday 21st March

If you want to be the best, and if you want to beat the rest, delegation is what you need.

Just ask Roger Daltrey. When The Who vocalist found he was going to be knee-deep in a six month tour of the United States and would therefore find it pretty tricky to fulfil his normal role curating the Teenage Cancer Trust shows at the Royal Albert Hall did he toss in the towel? No. Of course not. He did what anyone would have done in that situation: call Noel Gallagher.

Of course, most people would have been greeted with a response of "who are you?" or "where did you get this number?", but that's beside the point.

Gallagher has managed to convince a pretty stellar set of artists to participate including Primal Scream, who after last year’s rather joyous ‘Screamadelica’ retrospective, are now looking forward. Mani-less and with a new album ‘More Light’ to showcase, it should be an excellent chance to see how this new version of The Scream are bearing up in 2013.

Rakim & Raekwon and friends @ Stage 48, NYC, Thursday 21st March

Legends come together in NYC this week when two of the greatest MCs to ever do it join forces. Having been postponed twice due to the harsh New York winter weather, the God Emcee Rakim and Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon will finally perform together at Stage 48, a new joint located in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen. A one-off event, we don’t really know what to expect. Perhaps a kind of hip hop variety show, with fellow hip hop phenomenon and greatest producer of all time contended Pete Rock on the ones and twos, as well as appearance from famed radio DJ Stretch Armstrong. Whatever the mechanics of it, with so many of hip hop’s finest in the building, this one will be hot no doubt.

Charlie Boyer and the Voyeurs @ The Lexington, London, Thursday 21st March

We’re not sure you can ever get enough of Charlie Boyer and the Voyeurs right now. Heavenly Recordings think so too, and it’s all there on the Edwyn Collins-produced debut single ‘I Watch You’ released at the end of 2012.

A nationwide tour with labelmates TOY brought them much-needed attention and on stage is where they really get going. Their sound is great mix of shoegaze indie and sharp pop writing. You can hear what all the fuss is about, and see their delightful fringes, at The Lexington this week, in support of new album ‘Clarietta’ – released on May 20th.

Tyler, the Creator @ Music Hall of WIlliamsburg, NYC, Saturday 23rd March

The always contentious Tyler, the Creator makes a stop at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg this week as part of his extensive US tour to promote his soon to be released third solo record, ‘Wolf’. The Odd Future main man has toured relentlessly both solo and with his group these past couple years and will spend even more time away from his LA home having just announced a slew of new dates where he will perform with fellow Odd Future cohort Earl Sweatshirt.

The New York crowds will have to contend with just Tyler though, but that shouldn’t dampen their excitement. Odd Future fans are notoriously vehement in their support of the group. In fact, earlier this month a reportedly 2,000-strong line of fans queuing for a free Tyler show in Boulder, Colarado caused a “riot situation” that led to 80 officers being called to the scene, some in full riot gear. “Kill people, burn shit, fuck school” is right.
