Damon Albarn has hinted that Blur could be set to break cover with some intimate shows in 2010.
Blur’s reformation was an emotional experience. Headlining Glastonbury, the band drew thousands to their slot on the Pyramid Stage. Breaking into ‘Tender’ the crowd sang along, reducing frontman Damon Albarn to tears.
Putting aside their differences, the band then decided to embark on a round of solo projects. Damon Albarn is currently on tour with Gorillaz, but admitted that Blur could be set to return in 2011.
Speaking to Sky News the singer hinted at the possibility of more dates from the band. “We did talk about doing something in January, something small, no career-based world domination ideas,” Albarn said.
The band have a history of intimate shows. When they returned in 2009, Blur played shows in Rough Trade East and even a railway museum. Shunning the idea of a career has been beneficial to the singer. “Once I stopped seeing it as a career and just started making music – things have got a lot easier,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Damon Albarn also took on the Conservative government, slating the government for cutting funding to the arts. “This is what always happens with a Conservative government” he said.
“I don’t understand why the arts are always the first to be slashed. Its about the spiritual health of the country, if we get rid of the arts you are really jeopardising that, sadly what will happen if we cut everything.”
Elsewhere, Damon Albarn praised Gorillaz collaborator Shaun Ryder who recently entered ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’. “I hope he wins, of course I won’t be watching, I don’t watch things like that” he explained.
“I hope he enjoys it – I don’t know – do you enjoy things like that or do you get paid to be slightly humiliated.”
