British indie stars Bloc Party have stunned fans in Australia by playing a very special secret show.
Bloc Party erupted onto the indie scene back in 2004 with a clutch of great singles and sensational shows. The band followed this with their debut album ‘Silent Alarm’, which has proved to be massively influential.
Spearheading a post-punk revival the band took the spiky guitar sound of Gang Of Four and gave it a modern spin. Singer Kele Okereke’s lyrics were deeply personal, touching on politics and a confused sexuality.
Since then the band have done their best to move away from their early sound. Recent album ‘Intimacy’ contained elements of electronica and dance, but still boasted enough indie dancefloor stompers to keep their fans happy.
Handing the album over to a select band of producers has resulted in a stunning new remix album. ‘Intimacy – The Remixes’ shows a different side to the band, but retains Bloc Party’s distinctive songwriting.
The band briefly took a step backwards recently, playing a secret show in Australia. Billed as ‘The Silent Alarms’ the band took to the stage in the pub area of the Great Northern Hotel in Byron Bay on Friday (July 24th).
Bloc Party rattled through tracks from their debut album, while also playing ‘Two More Years’ and ‘The Marshalls Are Dead’. Playing to just 400 fans the band were on sensational form, warming up for their appearance at the Splendour On The Grass event.
“They billed us as The Silent Alarms so we decided to live up to the name,” frontman Kele Okereke explained from the stage. “We’re here in the most beautiful part of Australia and we wanted to do something special for you.”
Opening with ‘Like Eating Glass’ the group rattled through some of their finest early songs. Fans cheered ‘So Here We Are’ before Bloc Party finished with an abrupt version of ‘She’s Hearing Voices’.
