Antony & The Johnsons are set to bring their ‘Swanlights’ show to New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
Antony Hegarty’s live show has always been pretty special. The British-born, New York-based singer can command an audience with the power of his songwriting alone, added to his utterly unique voice.
Backed by the Johnsons, the songwriter returned last year with new album ‘Swanlights’. Performing a number of typically stunning shows, Antony Hegarty will now bring the record back to New York.
The Museum of Modern Art have invited the singer to take part in a large scale project, including a 60 piece orchestra and even lasers.
Announcing the plans, MoMA revealed that ‘Swanlights’ will be brought to the Radio City Music Hall on January 26th. The new show will incorporate material from the recent album, alongside Hegarty’s previous work.
The potentially epic show will apparently be a “meditation on light, nature and femininity” – which sounds like an average concert from Antony Hegarty.
The performance was initially set to take place in MoMA’s Marron Atrium, although it has now been switched to a larger venue. Speaking to The Times, the museum’s chief curator at large Klaus Biesenbach explained that the show will be an enormous undertaking.
“(It) became more and more clear … (that) because (Antony) fills it so much with light and sculptures and the orchestra – it’s so full, it literally wouldn’t allow for any audience any more” he said.
“If you have a scale from serious to popular, I see Antony very much on the serious side,” he continued. “In German, we say something can be U or E. U is Unterhaltung, which is entertainment, and E is Ernst, which is serious. And I see him more at the E, and not on the U.”
