Ray Winstone For Ian Dury Flick

More details emerge of biopic

More details have emerged of the forthcoming Ian Dury biopic ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’.

Ian Dury was unique. A bout with polio left him disabled, yet he fought adversity to have a string of hit singles. A Londoner, Dury relied on the language he heard around him in everyday circumstances to craft his songs, creating an entirely new kind of songwriting.

As the frontman with Kilburn & The High Roads the singer was a prime influence on punk, from the band’s teddy boy image to their dis-regard for prevailing progressive trends. After the group split Dury formed The Blockheads with whom he had some stunning success.

The band’s debut album ‘New Boots And Panties’ was released in 1978. Spawning two number one singles the album is now regarded as a classic, and perhaps the fullest realisation of Dury’s vivid pop imagination.

The star died in 2000, but his legacy lives on with The Blockheads still recording and touring across the nation. News broke that a film would be made of his life last year, but until now details have been scarce.

Andy Serkis has already been cast as Ian Dury, with Serkis perhaps best known for playing Gollum in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Joining him will be legendary East End actor Ray Winstone, star of iconic British borstal movie ‘Scum’.

Naomie Harris has been cast as Dury’s girlfriend, reports the Daily Mirror, and the cast will be joined by the likes of Mackenzie Crook, Olivia Williams, Toby Jones and Noel Clarke.

The Ian Dury biopic ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’ is due to be released next year.
