Indie icon Jarvis Cocker is set to star in the new filmed adaptation of Roald Dahl’s ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’.
Jarvis Cocker is a man of many talents, yet this would be his first major film role. The one time Pulp frontman turned solo with 2005’s ‘Jarvis’ album, and recently hooked up with Steve Albini to work on the follow up.
Chicago based Albini added a sharp rock edge to the album, which is due to be titled ‘Further Complications. Featuring Cocker venting his spleen in fine style, the new record is one of his most impassioned and gripping to date.
Cocker could be set for a new career path soon, however. The singer has been confirmed as working on the forthcoming adaptation of ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. One of Roald Dahl’s best loved novels, Jarvis Cocker will apparently provide the voice for Petey – a puppet which is said to closely resemble the indie icon.
Speaking to British broadsheet The Times Jarvis Cocker confirmed that he has been working on the project, with his role set to involve a musical contribution. Claiming to have written a “little hoedown number” for the film, but also revealed that his Northern brogue has posed problems.
“I did a narration bit at the start of ‘… Mr Fox’, too, but they showed that to test audiences in the US and they were very bamboozled. So I’ve ended up on the cutting-room floor. I tried to enunciate clearly!” Jarvis Cocker claimed.
Wes Anderson is helming the project, which will follow the release of Cocker’s new album. The singer revealed that he was in part inspired by the current financial crisis when working on the raw, ragged new material.
“I know everybody has to weave the credit crunch into every single aspect of society… But going through it and seeing a market failure and a loss of faith in the capitalist model, to me it sticks in my craw to then aggressively market myself to people. It just doesn’t seem appropriate somehow.”
The Sheffield musician has already previewed one track from the album. Single ‘Angela’ was a ferocious return, and you can watch the video on ClashMusic by clicking HERE!
Jarvis Cocker’s ‘Further Complications’ is released today (May 18th).
