CLASH continues its collaboration with VERO True Social spotlighting emerging talent via their Amplify series, offering insight into the creative forces driving the next wave of homegrown performers.
For our last installment, Raheaven shared her brand of brazen soul and we continue the emphasis on UK RnB, spotlighting Tottenham Songbird Miraa May.
Born in Algeria, Miraa May’s journey would later situate itself against the backdrop of North London, a hub known for its cross-cultural hybridity. Growing up May leaned on a diverse list of influences, ranging from Beyoncé to My Chemical Romance to the melismatic sounds of traditional Arabic music. She plied her craft as a go-to songwriter for the likes of Jorja Smith, Mahalia and Little Simz, making a seamless transition to a solo star dipping into minimal neo-soul production, embracing UKG-inflected anthems and hazy mid-tempos across projects ‘N15’ and ‘Care Package.’
Now, May flits between motherhood and a career that inches forward into pop’s main stage. On her debut album ‘Tales of a Miracle’, May tackles the struggles of a public-facing female through her pen, emerging as a necessary discourse-starter within the industry. The project is an expansive and intimate exploration of the adversities she’s faced in her life thus far, the ‘miracle’ being her survivor’s mentality.
As part of VERO Amplify’s Deep Dives 5 interview, the North Londoner reveals the film, music and literature that have shaped her creative instincts. May also performs an acoustic rendition of current single ‘Wild Things’, filmed at the Clash Studio. Of the song, May says: “It was an accumulation of how I felt at the time. I had a three month old, and just needed to get out of my house and do something because I felt like I was going crazy.”
