Uniqlo Grand Prix 2015: Star Wars

The Japanese brand taps George Lucas's empire for the annual competition.

Maybe they were inspired by the upcoming release of ‘Star Wars Episode VII’ – the first film since 2008 – or perhaps the powers that be simply were overwhelmed by the appearance of Luke, Yoda, et al on Rodarte’s stunning AW14 ballgowns.

Whatever the reason, George Lucas’s space opera is the theme for Uniqlo’s 2015 Grand Prix competition. Open to entrants internationally from today, the Grand Pix is an annual T-shirt competition that asks fans of the Japanese brand to create their ideal tee, using said theme.

Artists such as Madonna and KISS themed last year (for SS14), while Coca-Cola and Mickey and Minnie Mouse have also held the honour beforehand in 2012 and 2011, respectively.

Kicked off in 2005, winners see their designs go into production – and later on the shop floor in 16 different countries – while cash prizes this year include $10,000 (Grand Prix), and $500 for both second and additional winners.

With Star Wars in mind, first and second prize winners also each receive a tour of the Lucasfilm headquarters in San Francisco, from which Lucas and co work on developing special effects, sound and computer animation.

The competition runs until 31st August; find out more here.
