U:Music – Bossa Nova-load!

Zombie Disco Squad's U:Music DJ set contributes to the carnival spirit...

Zombie Disco Squad, who kindly DJ-ed last night on U:Music radio, sound like they enjoy nothing more than swigging cocktails at a Brazilian carnival. Their track ‘Vie’, out now on Made To Play, is a fantastically odd fusion of bossa nova, disco and house, and makes you want to don a feathery hat and shake your hips like a Rio de Janeiran dancer.

But they are not the only ones in the capital adopting the carnival spirit. Just as last year afrobeat became a staple diet for London’s musicians, bossa nova is gradually becoming part of the mainstream. Only last month Friendly Fires’ Ed McFarlane announced that the trio’s second album will be a mix of samba, bossa nova and calypso – a shift illustrated by the Brazilian dancing troupe who have been touring with the band since last year. Similarly, genre-bending six piece The Laurel Collective – who act as reviewers on this week’s singles round up – get down to a distinctly South American groove with their new single ‘Fax of Death’, which
sounds like The Strokes crossed with Gilberto Gill, if such a thing is possible. Better start practising that pelvic thrust for this years festival season…
