Ebbot Lundberg, energetic frontman of The Soundtrack Of Our Lives, walks us down the winding path of his musical career.
Highs
The best is yet to come…
“There’ve been so many magical moments, but it feels like we’ve just done the best album so far with ‘Communion.’ It’s the first time we succeeded doing a proper double album. There’s always been a tension when we record, an ego thing, but this time the album itself flowed naturally. It felt like a new start. I don’t really care how much it sells. The most important thing is that it’s there and we’ve done it.”
Making my first ever album.
“Making an album was always a dream of mine. When that came true in 1986 with my first band, Union Carbide Productions, it was a revelation and a lot of fun. We recorded for two weeks, we were just partying, being nineteen-years-old, and there was so much energy. You get hooked on the feeling of making a record, and I knew this was what I always had to do. To come into the right path was such a buzz, and I’m still doing it. I enjoy being in the studio as much as I love performing.”
Lows
Recording with Steve Albini.
“A huge low was going to Chicago with Union Carbide in 1992 to record with Steve Albini. It was horrible, but it wasn’t his fault, it was just a bad decision. We were a pre-grunge band, we weren’t part of the grunge scene, and we were trying to catch up with it, which was bad. The album was okay, but I felt like shit – I stopped believing long before we recorded it, I felt we weren’t going anywhere. We were in Chicago for a month, but we were more or less dead as a group at that time. I was also going through a horrible year personally, it was hard to wake up and face another day. Then I met my wife, and that changed a lot – some things happen for a reason. The rest of the band are artists and we’re still friends, but I wanted to move onto something more pop-oriented. Union Carbide was more like a temporary underground thing. Everything is a school, you’re always learning.”
