This month, Graeme Sinden from The Count And Sinden reveals his secret love for kung fu movies.
“I suppose my Private Passion would be kung fu films. The first films I saw were Jackie Chan’s on the TV. He really made an impact on me, especially the comedy films. They were really zany and unique. I remember seeing Wheels On Meals and thinking that was crazy. From there I went back, did my own research and found a lot of other artists I liked.
I’ve got heavily into ’70s grindhouse cinema, the kind of films they would show at drive-in cinemas in America. With Kill Bill I got a lot of the references. It’s good to see Sonny Chiba in there and Tarantino’s done a lot for turning people onto old grindhouse.
Looking back retrospectively I would have loved to have been around when it exploded. Five Fingers Of Death is one of my favorites. I’ve got a soft spot for this film called Master Of The Flying Guillotine as well. I wouldn’t want to get in a fight with Sonny Chiba. He wouldn’t think twice about double-crossing me. His character in The Streetfighter is just so mercenary. That’s a thing I really love about this type of kung fu. Another thing that really got me into the movies is the Wu-Tang. I was massively into ‘36 Chambers’ so I’d love to do some kung fu scores.”
