The Asteroid Galaxy Tour

Candy Coated Funk Pop

Swirling helter skelter melodies trickle into your ear like liquid sunshine and as the effervescent saxophone swaggers in it proceeds to groove down your auditory canal in full carnival panache before flooding your head in an overwhelming funk pop explosion of psychedelic harmonies and uplifting rhythms turning your brain into indie pop candyfloss.

Those responsible for this joyous assault on the senses are Copenhagen’s The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. This six-piece consist of sultry pixie princess Mette Lindberg (vocals), Lars Iversen (bass, keys), Miloud Carl Sabri (trumpet), Sven Meinild (saxophone), Mads Brinch Nielsen (guitar, keys) and Jesper Elnegaard (drums).

Melodies Trickle Like Liquid Sunshine..

Only an infant in musical terms after forming last summer, an excitable Mette tells us about the beginnings of the band. “Lars called me up and said, “Mette, Mette, Mette, please have a listen… I want you to sing this”.” So, in short she did and the band then blossomed in to the twelve-legged pop octopus it is today.

Coming over like The Mamas And Papas, The Concretes, The Cardigans and Gnarls Barkley all in rolled into one, the distinctive vocals from Mette stretches out coyly enticing you in whilst the tiptoeing keyboard lines dance a merry waltz with the new wave pop funk pirouetting in and out of the songs. Catching the attention of young Miss Amy Winehouse they supported her at a sold out VEGA venue in Copenhagen for their first show after only two rehearsals.

Debut single ‘The Sun Ain’t Shining No More’ (Small Giant Records) is a well disguised ode to heartache and beneath the rousing melodies and harmonies Mette purrs “it leaves my soul on the floor like a dog…for a while I’m shouting but later I’m crying, instead of getting stronger I’m always getting weaker”, bearing her soul in a way that makes you feel disturbingly voyeuristic but leaving you unable to control your body swaying.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the songs Mette carries on, “I think a lot of people know about the creative pain you get from a broken heart.” After pausing she continues, “And by that I’m not saying that that leads to only heartache, for us I think that everyone we meet is the source,” she says adding a reassuring smile at the end.

Recently coming over to the UK to play a few shows in London over the summer it appears no one was immune to their charisma as they charmed their way through the city that can be guilty of being less than responsive sometimes. But the angelic magic of six Danes and a bucketful of sweet pickled melodies and irresistible hooks did the trick it seems.

Pondering this, Mette finishes: “The fact that the crowd is not your mom, dad and friends actually gives you more energy to just give it all you got, because there is no one you know in the audience. I think that the people that came to our concerts or just passed by and stayed were very happy; we have had great responses.”
