Terra Twin Are Spearheading A UK-Centric Wave Of Americana
There’s always been a facet of the UK psyche that looks across the ocean to American. Perhaps it’s the romance of the landscapes, or the sheer dominating part of pop culture that is occupies, but British musicians easily pull from the American songbook. Take London risers Terra Twin – part of a new wave of bands reinterpreting Americana from a defiantly British perspective, their debut EP ‘Head Leaking’ offers a dose of gilded songwriting thrills.
Out now, Terra Twin are no one-off phenomenon – there’s something brewing. Prima Queen and Wunderhorse could be said to be fellow travellers, while Irish breakout CMAT of course blends country-pop with fantastic lyricism.
With their debut EP out now, Terra Twin pick out some Americana inspirations for Clash readers.

Teeth Machine – Penny (picked by Maxim)
“I first heard this song last year and loved how intimate the vocals are and how the track descends into a harmonious howl. It’s a perfect song to drive late-night down country lanes to and let your mind wander.”

Stef Chura – All I Do Is Lie (picked by Lewis)
“The tone of her vocal carries so much weight to me on this track. It’s the kind of sound I can feel in my chest, I’m addicted to it. The song just builds on itself the whole way through and every time I listen to it I feel like I’ve been given new life. If I were a healthier person, I would work out to this.”

Divorce – Checking Out (picked by Alex)
“Divorce gets me through bitterly cold Monday nights. The guitar and vocal parts are beautifully in synch, bouncing off each other and connecting you to a sense of hope in their music. Also the visuals take you on a real Americana daydream.”

Theo Katzman – Be The Wheel (picked by Jonny)
“I love the dry piano sound in this. The pacing of the instrumentation in the track really elevates the choruses, and his voice is angelic. This tune reminds me of seeing a perfect sunset on holiday with your friends, drinking a few beers and talking rubbish together.”

Vegas Water Taxi – Get Clean (picked by band)
“We’ve always been fans of Ben Hambro’s writing. Vegas Water Taxi have so many foot stomping bangers. This one is proper Americana. Janky guitars and euphoric strings! A real one to bop your troubles away.”

Songs for Joanna – Willie J Healey (picked by band)
“This track has definitely inspired us. We took a band trip to see Willie play Electric Brixton last year and it was a melter. It’s fuzzy country pop tapping into teenage angst with a few face melting guitar solos. We love it.”
