If you were to die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day on Earth?
Today we ask James Lavelle to share his ideal last day on Earth as UNKLE release their new album ‘Where Did The NIght Fall’ (read ClashMusic’s review of the album HERE).
Where would you like to wake up?
Somewhere like Byron Bay in Australia. Just to take in the beauty on the last day, the wondrous surroundings and nature.
What would there be left to achieve you your final day?
The last thing you want to achieve is to be surrounded by your family. I’d just want to be surrounded by friends too and find some peace. A sense of peace.
Who’s coming to your last supper?
Everyone that I have ever collaborated with. We can just play all the records we’ve made together and celebrate, hopefully, the fifty years of making records together. Everyone from Chris Goss, and Josh Homme, to Thom Yorke through to Black Angels, Tim Goldsworthy to Pablo Clements, Will Bankhead and Bill Drury as well as my family and my best friends.
What would you like to banquet on?
The best Toru sushi in the world, Kobi beef done in a Carribean BBQ style.
How would you spend your evening?
I’d like to be dancing the night away, making love and listening to music. All done with the most amazing bag of weed you can possibly imagine so my last joint is perfect.
What would be your biggest regret?
My biggest regret would be that I wouldn’t be able to see my children grow further. Musically I’d have regrets if I can’t carry on doing what I do now.
The last album you’d like to listen to?
‘Blue Lines’ by Massive Attack.
How would you like to die?
After eating amazing food, making loadsa love then I would like to die peacefully in my sleep. Nice and quiet.
What will your final words be?
“Wow. Thank you!”
What song would you like to go out to?
‘100 Days’ by Mark Lanegan.
Which dead person would meet you at the pearly gates?
I’d love my dead grandfather, who I never met, to meet me. He was a singer on Radio 2; it’d be great to meet him and hear some beautiful Irish folk songs, and my grandmother with him playing piano.
If you could be resurrected the day after, what would you come back as and why?
Hopefully a very beautiful and balanced young child. Someone that manages not to have all the crazy complications that I seem to have, erm…acquired over the years.
Describe your vision of Heaven?
In many ways we are already here. I see the most beautiful things in the world as Heaven. When you see the sun going down over the clouds from an aeroplane and you can see the silver lining in the clouds, the wonders of the sea and a beautiful beach – then we are in Heaven already.
What will have you inscribed on your gravestone?
On a more cerebral level I’d like something like: ‘Know thyself nothing in excess’ – as hopefully I will have achieved that by then. And then on a more cheesy level, the lyrics to ‘My Way’. I’d have two, just because I like packaging and always have to do different formats: a double grave stone, designed by Nathan Coley.
