The French – in musical terms, at least – like to keep themselves to themselves.
The Gallic music scene is insular, allowing unique talents to flourish but rarely to reach beyond the country’s borders. The Dø are a two piece, whose sharp, moody songwriting has won them enormous acclaim their native France.
Capable of charging towards the number one spot on the French charts, The Dø have yet to translate to a wider British audience. New album ‘Both Ways Open Jaws’ is a tremendous step forward for the two piece, with their unsettling songwriting expanding to include traces of electronica.
As before, The Dø have a clear cinematic element with their music boasting a sense of drama to rank alongside the likes of The Knife and Bjork. Speaking briefly about ‘Both Ways Open Jaws’ the duo explained that they wanted to demolish the barriers around their music:
“To mix a Wurlitzer with a vibraphone and kitchen tool percussions, that’s what we like. We’re looking for the diversity and richness of sound, surprises in the details, orchestral colours. It certainly comes from our culture of classical music, our love of contemporary music, and of musicians like Charlie Mingus. The types of music that follow no map.”
